– (December 13th) – As of Tuesday December 13th, President-elect, Donald Trump and his administration had announced the appointment of Rex Tillerson, CEO of ExxonMobil to serve as the next Secretary of State. This announcement has sparked much controversy among the nation and will surely be a battle in the Senate.
Employed by ExxonMobil for over 40 years, Tillerson worked his way up within the oil company eventually reaching top status in 2006. As Trump’s choice for Secretary of State, Tillerson has already been receiving backlash.
Many Americans are not familiar with his name, and that is a cause of concern. Many have claimed to prefer a Secretary of State that has had prior political experience and status, whereas Tillerson has not had any.
Despite these aspects, Trump chose Tillerson for a variety of reasons. According to a tweet shown above, Trump claims: “I have chosen one of the truly great business leaders of the world, Rex Tillerson, Chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, to be Secretary of State”.
Tillerson has been said to have vast knowledge and experience with foreign nations, as much of the oil industry relies heavily upon other countries and negotiations. As Secretary of State, Tillerson will display his prior knowledge gained from past experiences in this position.
In terms of prior experience, Tillerson has had past relations with Russia and Vladimir Putin. In 2013, Vladimir Putin awarded Rex Tillerson with the Order of Friendship. This concept is something that is causing much controversy and is predicted to be an upcoming issue when it comes to gaining approval from the Senate.
“Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, tweeted strong, if thinly veiled, criticism of Tillerson on Sunday. He said: ‘Being a ‘friend of Vladimir’ is not an attribute I am hoping for from a #SecretaryOfState.’ “(Courtesy of CNN)
Although there has much been controversy around his name, there has also been praise. Due to the fact that many Trump supporters liked the idea that Trump was a political outsider and not involved with the typical Republican establishment, having an outsider as Secretary of State is appealing.
As his cabinet continues to fall into place and the inauguration approaches, watching the transition of the Trump administration will be something the American media and public are anxious to witness.
