There are few things more disheartening than the shocking news that some people consider you too old to go trick or treating on Halloween. It seems that once kids reach high school, it becomes okay to tell them that they cannot participate in an activity that they’ve done every year for who knows how long.

While I would encourage you to continue trick or treating for as long as you want to in high school, some people are too stressed by the stigma against older kids going out on Halloween and find themselves sitting at home, too sad to enjoy such a fun holiday! If you don’t want to go trick or treating for any reason this year, no worries, because we’ve got you covered. Here is a list of several fun activities for high schoolers who feel too old to go trick or treating:

Witches Woods: Witches Woods is open every Thursday-Sunday in the fall up until their final night on Halloween. They offer several frightful attractions, like the Haunted Hayride, Nightmare Mansion, and the Keeper’s Crypt. Grab a group of friends and see who is the bravest of them all on Halloween night. Click here for more information.

Scary movie marathon: Bundle up from the cold and enjoy some of the most thrilling movies you can think of. From the “Saw” movie saga, to Stephen King’s classics, to “Poltergeist” and “the Exorcist”, there’s a thrilling story for everyone. If you’re too easily scared, or with some kids, try watching some Halloween kids classics like “Nightmare Before Christmas” or “Monster House”.

Binge “American Horror Story” or “The Haunting of Hill House”: Want a story that last longer than a 2-hour long movie? Netflix is coming out with new works of horror left and right this time of year. It recently came out with “The Haunting of Hill House”, a 10-episode series loosely based on the 1959 Shirley Jackson novel.
If that’s not your thing, there are 7 seasons of “American Horror Story” that are complete and on Netflix. Each season is the same cast playing different characters in different situations. From ghosts to witches to cult leaders, American Horror Story has something for every viewer.

Carve Pumpkins: Have a competition who can make the spookiest or funniest pumpkin carving! Jack-o-lanterns are a fun and easy way to decorate your house and get into the Halloween spirit. After your done, cook up some pumpkin seeds and have a festive fall snack.

Halloween party: Cook up some fun Halloween-themed snacks and have a few friends over for a costume party! Play spooky music, watch a movie, and have a costume contest to see who has the most Halloween spirit. Play fall-themed games like bobbing for apples. Have a fun, safe party with some friends and enjoy the night!

Have a bonfire: Gather round the fire with some friends and swap the scariest stories you can think of! Enjoy the cool fall night before snow sets in. Cook some hot dogs, roast some marshmallows, and bundle up under the stars next to a nice warm fire.

Hand out candy: Handing out candy can seem kind of boring, especially if you live in a secluded neighborhood, but find a way to make it your own! Dress up, play spooky music, maybe even decorate your walkway to be a miniature haunted house. Find creative ways to spook trick or treaters and have fun while doing it.
