Bruce Jenner, “world’s greatest athlete”, participant of 1976 Olympics, motivational speaker, and star on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians”, speaks out to ABC News, Diane Sawyer, and on an even larger scale, the nation.

Jenner said when he was around 8 or 9 years old that he wanted to try something new. He states that he remembers when his mother and sister were out, he would go into their rooms and try on their clothes.

While Jenner spoke with Sawyer he told her that he still refers to himself using male pronouns but also refers to  himself as “Bruce” and “her.” “I like her,” Jenner said. “I look at it this way- Bruce always telling a lie. He’s lived a lie his whole life about who he is. And I can’t do that any longer,” says Bruce Jenner on ABC News.

As he returns to his hometown for the first time in 50 years to do the interview in Tarrytown, New York, Jenner tells Diane that returning to his hometown brought back early memories of his childhood by putting on dresses and wearing a scarf to cover his short hair.

Bruce remembers struggling with gender identity and resenting everyone else who felt comfortable in their own skin.

Jenner told ABC News that people “may learn to live with” hiding from their feelings “but it’s never going away… This is basically who you are, and that’s tough to change. For me, 65 years, I’ve never been able to be myself. Be who I am and it’s never going away.”
