Nashoba’s National Honors Society is not just a group of average students. It’s a group of kids who excel in school and thrive in their service endeavors.

This year more than ever, NHS has been focusing heavily on community service. Leaders have been hard at work to provide opportunities for students to help the community and make a difference. This method of planning has allowed all NHS members to participate in different activities, throughout the year.

Ms. Rocha, NHS leader, says “We decided last year that having several small activities was more effective than trying to run one large activity.  With a large membership, it is difficult to get everyone available at the same time so this allows the students to work around their busy schedules and still contribute.”

According to Ms. Rocha, NHS’s events are “’in the planning stages’ but include a winter glove/hat collection, a Dr. Seuss day at some local nursery schools, and baking cookies for the community’s police officers.  All of which are intended to help others in our local communities.” Another plan is to help “with the Thanksgiving Pie fundraiser with Scholars for Dollars.  As an organization, we aren’t making a profit so this is an extension of our community service.”

Even though NHS devotes most of its time to community service, the leaders have also found ways to fundraise for their own organization. This year’s fundraiser involves some festive Nashoba washable tattoos. The tattoos sport a sleek “N” with a chieftain spear, and can be worn anywhere on your body. NHS members have been selling the tattoos at various sporting events to pep up school spirit.

The tattoo business has proven to be impressively lucrative for NHS. As of right now, profits have reached around $150.

NHS has been working very hard and with a little support from us all, they can make a real difference in the community.
