The 2014 National Honors Society chapter at Nashoba is aspiring to install refillable water stations at the school for this year’s group project.

National Honors Society is a national organization that highlights outstanding students in our nation’s high schools. NHS is not just about academic achievement, but also, service to their communities and excellent character. The program encourages students to maintain academic excellence as well as continuation of service to their communities.

There are approximately 150 members of the National Honors Society chapter at Nashoba. The four main goals of the students who participate in NHS are to promote leadership, serve the community, create enthusiasm for scholarship, and develop character.

English teacher Ms. Rocha also serves as the co-advisor of NHS. “Our goal is to have enough money for this to be successful,” she said. “To install one (refillable water station) and then it appears that Dr. Graham has approved of finding enough money to install a second, kind of matching us sort of deal”. These refillable water stations are common on college campuses and have been successful in cutting back the use of plastic water bottles in other high schools.

“I think that for my first year as co-advisor this particular project is a huge huge undertaking and theres a lot of money that needs to be raised, so I hope that it is successful,” said Ms. Rocha about overseeing her first NHS project.

The NHS members have been busy on this project so far. President Tommy Taft, Publicity Leader Merissa Kuovo, Vice President Pablo Adalpe, Secretary Nyshida Gurijala, and Treasurer Chris Buck are among the most active participants in launching this years project. Ms. Rocha credits these members on doing a lot of “behind the scene work” currently.

The National Honors Society will launch their fundraising efforts in the near future for they hope to accomplish the installation of the refillable water stations by the time this years seniors graduate.
