As the weather turns colder, outside activities quickly take a backseat to more desirable indoor activities as the holidays loom and winter approaches. One enjoyable pastime for adults and children alike is going to the movie theaters to see the newest flicks. There are a multitude of new movies coming out in the following months.
On Friday, September 23rd, Storks, an animated fantasy following a baby girl discovered in a packaging factory run by storks, was released. Storks previously used to deliver babies, but have switched to packages. Tulip, the only human within the stork factory, and Junior, the top delivery stork, rush to deliver the baby before the boss finds out.
The following Friday, the 30th, three very different movies were released: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Masterminds, and Deepwater Horizon.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a movie based off of the book by the same name by Ransom Riggs. It’s a fantasy/adventure movie about a boy who discovers a house full of peculiar children, and his destiny is to protect them from those hunting them for their powers. It was directed by Tim Burton, and fans were expecting it to be a bit scary and dark, as Burton’s movies tend to be. For a full review of this movie click here.
Masterminds is an action/crime film starring Zach Galifianakis and Owen Wilson, two big name comedy stars who head up an overall strong cast. The release date has been pushed back several times due to financial troubles, but comedy-lovers are optimistic about the movie. The film is centered on Galifianakis, who is the driver of an armored car. He gets talked into a heist to break up the monotony of his every day job, and he, his work crush, and several other crazy helpers successfully carry it out, but the problems don’t stop there.
Deepwater Horizon is based off of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico, starring actors such as Mark Wahlberg, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien and Kate Hudson. The actors play real life heroes and the film is based on true events. Early criticism has shown generally positive reviews, and those who enjoy action packed stories with a real-life element are sure to enjoy this movie.
For thriller/crime drama lovers, The Girl on the Train premiered on Friday, October 7th. It stars Emily Blunt, an alcoholic divorcee who becomes entangled in a missing person’s case. Her ability to remember information about the case is considered inaccurate because of her drinking tendencies, but she soon becomes wrapped up in the lives of those she only used to watch on the train that she took every day; people she made up backstories for in her mind, but never expected to meet.
The highly anticipated Ouija 2 opened on Friday, October 21, a creepy movie for just before Halloween about a widowed mother and her two daughters, who accidentally invite actual evil into their home during a new segment in their scam-seance business. The evil possesses the youngest daughter and the family must confront the spirit to save her, a terrifying feat that horror lovers cannot miss.
On a lighter note, Keeping Up with the Joneses premiered on Friday, October 21 as well. The action-comedy is centered around a suburban couple, played by Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher, who befriend their seemingly normal neighbors,. Little did they know, their neighbors are actually government spies. They find that keeping up with the extremely sophisticated and attractive Joneses is harder than they could have ever thought, finding themselves in the middle of an international espionage plot.
On Friday, November 4th, Marvel’s Doctor Strange and Dreamworks’ Trolls are set to be released.
Doctor Strange is about a neurosurgeon, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, who learns the mystic arts from the ‘Ancient One’ after a car crash that ends his career. Also starring Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton, this movie is sure to excite Marvel, fantasy and action fans alike.
Trolls is an animated movie following the story of two trolls, Branch and Poppy, who must complete a quest to save their troll town from the Bergens, a group of much larger, more evil trolls. Branch and Poppy travel along on a musical, bright, fun filled adventure that is sure to be great for kids.
Disney’s new princess movie, Moana, premieres on Wednesday, November 23rd. Many are optimistic about this upcoming movie about a Hawaiian girl who sets off on an overseas adventure to save her people and fulfill an ancient quest. She meets the demigod Maui, who accompanies her on her trip. The graphics in the trailers have been complex and lively, and the storyline has impressed those who have been wishing for a Disney princess story in which the princess can succeed without a prince. Some aspects of the movie are reminiscent of Disney’s most recent hit, Frozen.
There is definitely enough genre representation shown by the upcoming fall movies for everyone to find something that they enjoy. So get a group of family or friends together and grab your popcorn, because its time to go to the movies.
