On May 4th the House of Representatives voted to pass the American Health Care Act with only two votes to spare. This bill is designed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, and is backed by many prominent conservative leaders, including President Trump and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. The group that wrote the healthcare bill consisted of 13 men, one of whom is Senator Mitch McConnell the Republican Senate Majority Leader. It should be noted, however, that no women were involved in the team that drafted the bill, a bill that dealt heavily with woman’s health.

There is major controversy over the bill, as it would leave millions who are currently covered by the Affordable Care Act without health insurance. While those with pre-existing conditions would still be covered, insurance companies would be able to raise their rates, making healthcare too expensive for many.

The bill also proposes to halt the expansion of Medicaid, as well as to increase premium rates for the elderly. Both of these issues are expected to raise more concerns in the Senate than in the House.

With the bill now up for voting in the Senate, many senators are not quite confident on whether or not the bill will pass. There is no set timeline for the bill, and with many senators up for reelection, some are hesitant to get involved in the controversial topic of healthcare. It is expected that the Senate will take up to two months to vote on this legislation.
