ESPN reporter, Jemele Hill, has been suspended following tweets violating the company’s social media guidelines. The tweets came in the midst of turmoil surrounding National Anthem protests in the NFL.

Trump recently spoke at a rally in Alabama, imploring owners to, “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he’s fired. He’s fired!”, regarding players who kneel for the National Anthem. His attack on the player’s right to free speech was met with nearly unilateral pushback, as almost every NFL team participated in some form of protest.

This included Dallas Cowboys Owner, Jerry Jones, who knelt with his players in a show of defiance against the president’s comments. A week later however, Jones changed his tone, saying, “If there’s anything that is disrespectful to the flag, then we will not play”. This comment met similar pushback to Trump’s on social media. But despite extensive calls from those on social media, no players knelt on the field the following week.

Understanding the tough position that players are being put in, Jemele advocated for a different method of protest, tweeting, “ A more powerful statement is if you stop watching and buying their merchandise”, and later went on to write that the burden of protests should not be placed on the players.

These tweets, calling for the boycott of the Dallas Cowboys following their owners stance, directly interfere with the company’s financial partnership with the NFL and its teams, resulting in the suspension of Hill.
